The Story Lab is Surf Sisters for Science’s intersectional storytelling program. We elevate place-bound stories of environmental change rooted in diverse knowledge perspectives, and then connect these stories to conventional climate science. Through The Story Lab, we are bridging story with science for a deeper understanding of

how the environment is changing and why it matters.

The Story Lab Method was designed based on citizen climate journalism values, knowledge bridging techniques, indigenous methodologies, and feminist critiques of epistemological equity.  We interview folks about the environmental changes they have witnessed over many years, and often generations, of living in some of the most remote places in the world. We connect these stories rooted in intersectional perspectives with conventional scientific data for to co-produce a richly textured account of how the climate is changing and how it impacts frontline communities, particularly communities of indigenous descent. ... Our process is iterative and slow, and we like it that way.

The Story Lab: Andes is focused on place-based stories of environmental change in the Peruvian Andes mountain range. We partner with small villages on the front lines of climate impact to co-produce stories that describe the ways in which the environment is changing, and how these changes impact livelihoods and Andean cultural heritage...Our goal is to co-create stories that elevate intersectional understandings of how climate change impacts the relationships between humans and the environment...
